opportunity to meet other couples
and share experiences.
Mike Waterman, 33, and Kelly
Kruse, 28, are preparing for their May
wedding. Kruse thought the workshop
would be something they would enjoy.
She understands marriage is a differ-
ent mind-set than dating, and hopes
the workshop wil make the transition
easier.
Adds Waterman, "Conflicts arise,
and I want to know how, together, we,
can find a solution without making
the other person feel like they have lost
the battle, or have given up something
they truly believe in. There are some
issues where there is no such thing as a
compromise. You can't have half a
child — it's either one, two or three.
In the face of a stalemate, how do you
reach a compromise?"
While Cohen feels the workshop is
worthwhile and the facilitators are
doing a great job, she hopes future
sessions might last for more than five
weeks. The short time frame, she says,
makes it feel like a "crash course."
Waterman and Kruse wonder if the
course might nor be more interesting
with both male and female facilitators.
Berkowitz and Shane would like to see
the workshop offered 2-3 times a year,
and are looking into separate sessions
for engaged couples and those newly
married.
They say marriage requires basic
understandings, as well as skills to
relate with each other in a relation-
ship that will be close, continuous
and lifelong. These skills can be
learned, they say, but it's important
to remember that preparing for mar-
riage is likely to be both fun and
painful. ❑
