Pass The Cookies

e all have weak-
nesses, and
mine is cookies.
I like chocolate, especially
with popcorn, but I wouldn't
lose any sleep if I never had

it again.
Cookies, on the other hand, call to
me, beckon to me. If they are in the
house, they are constantly whispering
to me, dragging me away from wher-
ever I am, pulling me as though in a
hypnotic trance, "Come to us, Eliza-
beth, come to us! Take us, not just
one, but all of us! We are yours!"
Several days ago I had a crazy
idea — yet again. I don't know
what happens to me, but suddenly I
decide that I'm going to abandon
all my vices, like constant cookie
eating, and start living healthy. I'm
going to drink eight glasses of water
a day and exercise. I'm going to go
to bed on time and think nothing but
positive thoughts. We're going to
drink fruit juice with every dinner
and dine on tofu and quinoa.
Usually, I'm awakened from my
dream by the end of the day, when
I realize the 12 cookies I plan to
eat aren't part of this whole healthy
outlook thing. "Life's too short for
tofu," I mumble, and head straight
for the kitchen cabinet.
I suppose I could hate myself in
the morning. But I don't. Those
cookies were too good. And
besides, I know that I can always
get right back on track with the
healthy plan. That's because I rec-
ognize cookie overindulgence for
exactly what it is: a mistake.
As my children grow, I am doing
my best to teach them all of those
important lessons: be polite, be
thoughtful, be responsible, be kind.
Respect others, remember to send
thank-you notes, eat what's put before
you. Have a sense of humor about
life, speak up for what you know is

right, apologize when you
are wrong.
Another key lesson I often
forget to mention, though I
think it's extraordinarily impor-
tant, is to know that every-
one makes mistakes. Now I
don't mean to suggest that
everything is excusable; of course
not. But recognizing your own imper-
fection, Wand acknowledging that
when others slight you they're likely
not doing it intentionally, makes liv-
ing, which already is fraught with so
many challenges and heartaches and

.

difficulties, a little easier.
The other day my daughter Adina
came home from school, and she
was mad. Apparently, a friend of
hers (whom I'll call Katie) already
had had an honor which the
teacher had forgotten, and then
Katie told the teacher she hadn't
gotten that honor and now Katie
gets it again and do you think that's
fair, Mommy, do you, because all
the other girls only get it once!
"Adina," I said. You know Katie
isn't the kind of girl to lie or do
something wrong on purpose.
Maybe she just forgot that she had
had this special job. Couldn't that
be? Haven't you made mistakes

yourself?"
Adina didn't say anything, but the
very next day I saw her with Katie.
There had been no fights, and no
one's feelings had been hurt.
Instead, the two were holding
hands and giggling, and they were

the best of pals.
