he jumps from his own trampoline or
from some low stairs.
When Jarad begins his sessions at
the center, Dovey often brushes his
arms and legs with a soft-bristle
brush; the action seems to calm his
body and prepare him to pay atten-
tion. Tracey uses a similar brush at
home.
Jarad also seems to respond to
deep-pressure massage so Dovey
taught Tracey how to make a "Jarad
sandwich" with pillows at home.
Tracey also works on developing fine
motor skills, such as using a scissors
and drawing a circle in the same
mannner Dovey does in therapy.
Jarad, who has developmental
delays and mild autism, was behind in
his motor skills and language. Tracey
says his speech has improved, he has a
longer attention span and listens bet-
ter to directions and that he's interact-
ing better.
"I had no idea about sensory inte-
gration, but now it makes sense to
me," Tracey says. "And he loves it
here. It's so fun, he doesn't think he's
working."
Jarad's family is fortunate their
insurance covers therapy; most insur-
ance companies don't, but it depends
on the diagnosis and type of policy.
Experts are hoping that will change
as word of SI therapy gains wider
acceptance. Many children benefit
from this therapy, including those
needing help with organizational
skills, for example.
Few clinics are doing SI therapy in
the metropolitan Detroit area.
Beaumont Hospital's Center for
Childhood Speech and Language
Disorders has established a program;
Sensory Systems Clinic operates in St.
Clair Shores and individual therapists
may offer treatment. Specialized train-
ing is required.
The Abilities Center has grown
tremendously since Spokojny and her
partner, fellow occupational therapist
Nikki Rosen-Lieberman, started their
comprehensive center in 1994. They
now have a staff of 17 full- or part-
time occupational, physical and speech
therapists who see nearly 150 children
and adults weeldy, run group sessions
to improve handwriting, operate a
summer day camp and provide thera-
py for several school districts.
They recently added three treat-
ment rooms and a preschool program
called The Village, which includes
therapeutic play and is designed for
out-of-sync children having difficul-
ties in traditional settings.
