going on in here?'" says Hertz with a
grin.
Good music was going on in there,
and it has been ever since. Says
Wolok, "What they do, I haven't seen
(elsewhere). They deserve a break and
I'll do anything to help them."
Shiffman reaffirms that pledge,
"We can give Bobby two or one days'
notice, or call him and say, 'We're
coming in tonight,' and he'll instantly
let us play.
With their repertoire of songs,
ranging from reggae to jazz to folk,
Phish, and funk — "Anything that has
an "f" sound, we play," jokes Klegon
— the Big Band creates a different
show every time, establishing the
JavaMaster as a weekend nightspot.

"We're very interactive," Klegon
says. "We talk with the crowd, invite
up guests." Such guests include fellow
North Farmington students Firdosh
Khambatta and Mike Kwapisc, who
make up the brass section, and Hertz's
father Howard, who plays the har-
monica. Other regu-
lar fixtures are Danny
Lee, roadie to the Big
Band and inspiration

jam session, and covers such as the
Doors' "Soul Kitchen."
The idea of three of the band's
members going off to college next year
— Klegon's a junior — doesn't seem
to phase them. Hertz and Shiffman
are rooming together at Indiana
University, where Klegon plans
to join them a year later.
"It's actually really cool that
we're interested in going to the
same school. None of us are
planning on going there for the
band," Klegon says.
Plotkin, who aspires to go to
Yale or Northwestern, has it.all
figured out: "My master plan is if
I don't go to their college I'll
become awesome at bass; I'll be
the best bass player in the world,"
he says. "And then, after college,
we'll reunite and have the best
bass player in the world."
Accepting the plan as the
final word on their future, the
band picks up their instruments
and proceeds to play a rousing
rendition of Phish's "Sample in a
Jar." These guys have other issues to
worry about: Plotkin has cuts on his
fingers. I
