eenage violence soon will
become the focus of the
Jewish Ensemble Theatre
(JET), first with the presenta-
tion of a new play about a shocking
crime from the '20s and second with
follow-up panel
discussions that
will explore issues
of violence today.

"I approached the script as a charac-
ter piece because I want the characters to
come across as real people," says director
John Michael Manfredi, recently named
associate artistic director at JET. "The
play begins in the months surrounding
the murder, and it portrays Clarence
Darrow as the first
attorney to use a
bad childhood as a
legal defense. The
plot delves into the
relationship of the
two murderers and
the role of the
media."
Although
Leopold and Loeb
were Jewish, it's not
an issue in the play,
according to
Manfredi.
The JET pro-
duction marks the
Midwest premiere
of the award-win-
ning drama and
stars former WJR
radio producer Hal
Youngblood as Clarence Darrow, David
Wolber as Leopold, John Hawkinson as
Loeb, Greg Trzaskoma as Robert Crowe
and features James Bowen, Carey Crim
and Jim Shanley

JETS production of
"Never the Sinner,"

Play, probes the so-
called thrill killing
of 14-year-old
Bobby Franks by
two wealthy Jewish
teenagers, Nathan
Leopold and
Richard Loeb. A
changing panel of
social service, legal
and media repre-
sentatives bring their firsthand experi-
ences to discussions with audiences
planned for Thursday evenings and
Sunday matinees.
The production opens in previews
Feb. 10 and runs through March 7 in
