inding a rhyme for a song about the Jewish Communi-
ty Center might take time = something about winter,
of course, and perhaps British playwright Harold Pin-
Ai
ter (all right, so maybe that's pushing it ...) But what if your
group had the challenge of writing a number about the Jew-
ish Vocational Service?
Nonetheless, intrepid participants at the Tzedakah Experi-
ence last Sunday did just that. As they learned about chari-
table giving, fifth-grade students from local Sunday and day
schools wrote and performed songs that focused on agen-
cies, such as the JCC and the DVS, that receive financial
support from the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
More than 500 families attended the annu-
al program, held at Temple.Beth El. The
Tzedakah Fair, chaired by Nancy Triest, was
presented by the Agency for Jewish Education
and its school services, Jewish Experiences
For Families programs, Jewish Educators
Council, Jewish Federation Women's Cam-
paign and Education Department, Temple
Beth El and The Jewish News.
In addition to learning about tzedakah, stu-
dents donated pennies they have been col-
lecting from families and friends. Money for
the Penny Harvest, which was chaired by
Roz Blanck, with assistance from Debbie
Chutz and Wendy Doigan, will be given to various Federa-
tion agencies.
Teens also made their mark at this year's Tzedakah Experi-
ence. Working in conjunction with the Michigan-Israel Con-
nection, six alumni of Teen Mission 2 helped fifth-graders
find a pen-pal in Israel's central Galilee, Federation's Part-
nership 2000 region.
