its emerging communal leaders.
Without that burst of energy, the
timbers that support Jewish continu-
ity will shake dangerously loose.
Says Seyburn: "Zionism is not
what it is used to be. In America, you
can live your whole life without any
connection to Israel whatsoever.
That's why it's so important to find a
Jewish cause and stay connected to
the Jewish state."
Impassioned about the JNF and its
devotion to Eretz Yisroel, Seyburn cuts
to the core about why Generation
X'ers bear such a heavy burden as Jews.
As the Oak Park resident so
unbashedly puts it:
"People my age better start to
appreciate who we are as a people,
and why a homeland is important us.
We must wake up to the fact that the
continued vitality of Judaism hinges
on those things happening." fl

the world realized that Jews could run
a state as well as the gentiles could,
this would be the proof necessary to
fulfill the failed Haskalah dream of
Jewish acceptance.
The Oslo accords are a continua-
tion of this utopian dream of an end
to anti7 Semitism/anti-Zionism com-
bined with the kabbalistic principle of
repairing the world or, in Israel's case,
repairing the supposed harm they have
done to Arab hegemony and pride in
the Middle East. As long as Jews,
especially in Israel, are motivated by
external priorities, such as worrying
what others think of them, which
explains the Israeli obsession with
"international opinion," Israel's strate-
gic decline will continue.
Judaism's salvation lies in repudiat-
ing all forms of mysticism, including
the kabbalah, both in its religious and
secular manifestations, and focusing
on the rational, particularistic and
nationalistic lessons of both the Five
Books of Moses and the Talmud.
