"When I was at the University of Michigan, the history courses that I took used the resources of the DIA," he explained. "I remember so many exhibitions that I'd see with a class. In other classes, we'd analyze the ways pieces were installed and lit." Berkowitz decided he wanted to go into museum work while living and working in Europe between his junior and senior years in college. He chose to attend U-M because it had a mas- ter's program in art history for people contemplating museum careers and because he could work with an instructor who had experience specifi- cally in European decorative arts. "My dissertation on an early 19th- century silversmith was the first deco- rative arts dissertation that the r department had," Berkowitz said.
