Additionally, the national JNF is
hosting Tu B'Shevat Across Ameri-
ca, a program for temples and syn-
agogues to show solidarity with
Israel, the environment and the JNF.
Congregations are being asked to
hold Tu B'Shevat sederim and spon-
. sot some of the 3 million trees the
JNF will plant this year in Israel. So
far, more than 500 congregations
nationwide have signed up.
JNF also holds a Two for Tu
B'Shevat program, through which a
child can buy a tree for someone
else — and receive one for himself,
as well.
Including a new certificate for
the child, the Two for Tu B'Shevat
costs S 1 8. Call the national JNF
office, 1-800-542-8733, for infor-
mation. II

A Good Read For Tu B'Shevat
Among the many activities that abound for Tu B'Shevat, don't forget the
wealth of enjoyment found in books, says Temple Israel library director
Rachel Erlich.
There are many selections geared for children that will not only add to
their appreciation of the new year for trees but will increase their environ-
mental awareness. She recommends:
• The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss (New York: Random House) describes the
results of the pollution problem.
• Honi's Circle of Trees by Philiis Gershator (Philadelphia: Jewish Publica
Lion Society) retells the legend of Honi the Circlemaker, who wandered
ancient Israel planting carob trees.
• Pearl Moskowitz's Last Stand by Arthur A. Levine (New York: Tam-
bourine Books) tells of Pearl's adventures when the city government tries to
chop down the last ginko tree on her street.
• A Prayer for Earth: The Story of Naamah, Noah's Wife by Sandy
Eisenberg Sasso (Woodstock, VT: Jewish Lights Publishing) relates how
Noah's wife gathered seeds from each plant on earth as Noah was gath-
ering the animals.
• The Never Ending Greenness by Neil Waldman (New York: Morrow
Junior Books) is the story of a young boy who comes to live in Israel after
World War II and plants trees, a practice that spreads across the country.
• Pearl Plants a Tree by Jane Breskin Zalben (new York: Simon & Schus-
ter Books for Young Readers) discusses the celebration of Tu B'Shevat and
other tree-planting festivals around the world through the story of Pearl and
her grandpa and their apple tree. 7
