Ethnography
Subject Of Talk
Dr. Fran Markowitz, senior lecturer of
anthropology in the Department of
Behavioral Sciences at Ben-Gurion
University and visiting research scholar
in the Department of Anthropology at
the University of Chicago, will present
the annual Derrow/Goodman Lecture
in Anthropology and Judaic Studies at 4
p.m. Tuesday, Feb 9, at the Michigan
Union, Ann Arbor.
Her lecture, "Black Hebrews and
African-American Partners: Conflicts
and Coalitions in Doing Ethnography,"
is co-sponsored by Judaic Studies and
the Department of Anthropology at the
University of Michigan.
She'll present research since 1992 on
the African Hebrew Israelite (black
Hebrew) community in Dimona, Israel.
Markowitz moved to Israel from
Chicago in 1992. Over the years, she
attended ceremonies and festivals and
interviewed several community mem-
bers in Dimona. In 1997, she received a
Binational (Israel-USA) Science
Foundation grant to conduct research
on the Hebrew Israelites in Dimona and
Chicago with an African-American -
research partner. Their fieldwork gave
rise to issues of how racial identities
come to the fore. The paper is a consid-
eration of the promises and pitfalls of
partnered ethnography, especially in
cases where race, gender and power rela-
tionships have a prior hold - even
though differently constituted — on
ethnographers and the researched popu-
lation alike.
The Derrow/Goodman Lecture in
Anthropology and Judaic Studies was
endowed by Dr. Charles Derrow in
honor of his parents, David and Muriel
Derrow, and in memory of Dr. Richard
M. Goodman.
