A reception honoring the gift from the Bermans to JESNA's campaign for Jewish Learning and Living was the weekend highlight. JESNA's goal is "Vibrant Jewish life through Jewish learning." Bill Berman is honorary chair of the JESNA board and principal supporter of JESNA's Mandell L. Berman Jewish Heritage Center for Research of Evaluation. He was a partner in and president of Bert L. Smokier & Co., later the Dreyfus Development Corp., until 1975. He served in many leadership positions in the building-industry, including president and national board member of the Builders Association, board member of New Detroit and board chairman of the Michigan State Housing Finance Authority, as well as chair of the Stillman Foundation. He has served on the boards of three New York Stock Exchange companies. The Bermans are involved in several Jewish and communal activities. He served as past president of the Council of Jewish Federations (CJF), the Detroit Jewish Welfare Federation and, much earlier, United Hebrew Schools of ,—/
