The Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit has appointed
Harlene Appelman director of the
Alliance for Jewish Education.
Before joining Federation, where
she directs the Community
Outreach and Education
Department, Appelman created and
directed family programs, which
include Jewish Experiences for
Families (JEFF), Family Camp and
Jewish acculturation programs for
Russian newcomers.
She is a consultant for the Whizin
Institute for the Family of the
University of Judaism and is a recip-
ient of the Covenant Award from
the National Covenant Foundation
and Federation's Mandell L. and
Madeleine Berman Award for out-
standing service as a communal pro-
fessional.
Appelman speaks nationally and
has contributed articles to the
National Jewish Monthly, Hadassah
Magazine and Moment Magazine.
She is the author of JEFF: A Manual
for Community Building and. Family
Education and writes a weekly col-
umn for Shabbos.Doc for Torah

annual Intercongregational Men's
Club Dinner at 6 p.m. Wednesday,
Feb. 3. The
event brings
together men

Orthodox
movements for
an evening of
brotherhood,
sociability, cock
tails and dinner. Raymond Tanter

The University of Michigan history
professor has been an adviser to presi-
dents on national security affairs, spe-
cializing in Middle Eastern affairs.

Tu B'Shevat
For Families

Harlene Appelman

As director of the Alliance,
Appelman will be responsible for the
Agency for Jewish Education and
the Jewish Life Fund. She also will
be a liaison between the Alliance
and all of the agencies and institu-
tions providing formal and informal
Jewish education in metro Detroit.

The Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit will host "Trees
of Life," a free family program for Tu
B'Shevat, 1:30-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan.
31, at the Kahn JCC.
The program is geared to families
imith children ages four-12. It will be an
opportunity for children and parents to
learn what Tu B'Shevat is all about
through hands-on crafts and projects to
take home. Activities will vary from
pot- decorating and potting saplings, <
creating edible trees, puppet making,
collage and recording family trees. Each
craft relates to biblical quotes and a
variety of concepts such as justice, the
environment, Torah lessons and Bible
stories, rules and discipline and fami-
lies.
Families may participate in idea-
sharing discussions, which will be pre-
sented periodically during the program
or discuss the ideas as a family unit
using the packets provided to each
family at the start of the program.
