Michigan Region is comprised of
more than 25 chapters, AZA and
BBG. Each chapter works diligently
to create songs, banners and athletic
teams that compete each year at
regional convention. This five-day
convention is a time to make new
friends, bond with old ones and share
in "friendly competition." This year's
convention was warm and wonderful
on many levels; this was not conveyed
in the article at all.
Don't get me wrong; I enjoyed
reading about broken traditions and
the ones that live on, and am proud
that you included Hanna LoPatin, a
member of my chapter, who has won
the storytelling competition for all
four of her regional conventions.
However, BBYO is a youth group for
males and females, and the BBG half
of it would have appreciated a little
more recognition for our regional
convention experience and involve-
ment.

Not only does Mr. Berk offend
Jews of all sects and backgrounds, but
he offends Jews in interfaith mar-
riages as well. When he berates Alan
Arkin and Eli Wallach for their assim-
ilation, he states, "That's what some-
times happens when you marry out of
the faith," blaming the gentile spous-
es for their lack of Jewish participa-
tion.
It's the assimilation that causes the
interfaith marriage, and not the other
way around.
How does one become an "hon-
orary Jew''? Mike Meyers must be
Jewish since he loves his Jewish wife
and her mother, too, right? Who
knew it was so easy to become Jewish?
Certainly not Kate Capshaw.
The only positive and accurate
comment in the entire four-page
article was by Alan Alda, who,
although his wife is Jewish, does not
claim to be Jewish and, in fact, states
that he is not — but his children
are.

Begin The Year
By Offending
I would like to respond to "Just How
Jewish Is Hollywood?" by Philip Berk
in the Jan. 1 Jewish News. What a way
to begin the new year — by offending
everyone!
Mr. Berk gives a list of people with
one Jewish parent — what is the
point? That doesn't tell us who is Jew-
ish and who is not, nor what their
identity to Judaism is.
Throughout the article, he refers to
people as half Jewish. By Halachah,
you cannot be half Jewish. You're
either Jewish or you're not. By his def-
inition, all people of Arabic decent are
really Jewish since they are all
descended from Abraham through
patrilineal decent.
Mr. Berk refers to Kate Capshaw
as a "convert"; apparently, he is igno-
rant of the fact that those who
choose to be Jewish (rather than
those who are Jewish by chance) do
not like to be referred to as converts.
Then he mentions that she is devoted
to Judaism. Aren't most people who
choose Judaism devoted to it? Espe-
cially those who choose Orthodox
Judaism?
He implies that, normally, people
who choose Judaism are not devoted
to it. If he did his research, he
would realize how incredibly incor-
rect he is.
