The bill, approved in its third and final vote by 50-49, requires the religiously liberal representatives to accept the rul- ings of the Orthodox Chief Rabbinate before taking their council seats. Reform leaders said they may seek court action to challenge the law. The vote came a day after Orthodox representatives on the Haifa religious council adjourned a meeting of the council soon after it opened. Israel's Chief Rabbinate had granted permission to the eight Orthodox members of the council to participate in the meeting with Reform and Conservative representatives. Had the Orthodox representatives not taken part in the meeting, the non-Orthodox members would have been authorized to make decisions regarding key posts. Jerusalem (JTA) — Thirty fervently Orthodox men joined the Israeli army. It was the first such group to enlist after the Supreme Court ruled last month that a decades-old arrangement exempt- ing yeshiva students from serving in the army is illegal. The 30 recruits will be part of a unit that will combine Torah study with army service. Chief Rabbi Causes Uproar Click onto People-Voice Connecter Personals via the Internet.
