experience was less typical. Most of
those in the Holocaust were East
European Jews, who were less integrat-
ed in society. "Otto would consider
himself as a German of Jewish faith,
the Polish Jews would not," she said.
Most Jews went ro the ghetto, and
were in the center of an oppressive
experience, she added. The selective
use of the diary made it a more uni-
versal and a less Jewish srory.
She said-that many nations used the
diary selectively as well. The German
translation changed the wording to
make it less direct, while the Dutch used
it to say they are a nation of rescuers.
Only 25 percent of Dutch Jews sur-
vived, she said. "Jews had a better
chance in Belarus and the Ukraine."
Editing of the book and the trans-
formation of the play pushed the same
message for 40 years.
Calling the unabridged version of
the diary, released in 1991, as "more
honest," she said the release of two doc-
umentary films of Frank after her cap-
ture has also painted a darker picture.
"The Last Seven Months of Anne
Frank" and 'Anne Frank Remembered,"
both released in the past few years,
"forces us to confront Anne Frank in
her utterly degraded state," she said.
"When she is not at all perky and ideal-
istic, when she is unattractive, sick with
typhus, and hopeless.
"With the passage of time and with
the evolution of the criticism of the
original handling of the diary, there
has emerged a possibility of complicat-
ing the picture," she said.
There was a greater possibility of
hope in the diary, she said. "If she
would have kept writing, would it be
the same?"
