NETTIE DEUTCH, 90, of Southfield,
died Jan. 21.
Mrs. Deutch was born in Newark,
N.J. and worked as a
bookkeeper for her
husband's store,
Paul's Cut Rate
Drugs, after they
married in 1930.
She received the
Heart of Gold award
from the United
Way Community
Services in 1981 for
providing needy people rides to the doc-
tor, baskets of food and donations. She
also funded bus transportation, helped
in the acquisition of a building for the
Children's Leukemia Foundation of
Michigan and established an endow-

ment fund at Wayne State University's
School of Pharmacy and Allied Health
Professions.
Mrs. Deutch is survived by her
daughters and sons-in-law, Shirleyann
and Harvey Altman of Lansing, Deena
and David Fishman of Bloomfield Hills;
grandchildren, Alan Altman, Libby and
Dr. Sam Berngard, Michael and Nina
Altman, Rita Altman and Bruce Burger,
Amy and Craig Singer, Lisa and Gary
Langnas, Nancy and Howard Luckoff;
great-grandchildren, Danielle Altman,
Brooke, Paul and Alexis Berngard,
Denna and Matthew Altman,
Stephanie, Allison and Melissa Singer,
Jessica and Emily and Natalie Langnas,

She was the beloved wife of the late Paul
Deutch and the dear sister of the late
Faye Coven.

S. Brooks Barron
A long-time patron of contempo-
rary art, S. Brooks Barron died Jan. 4.
The former Detroiter was a resident
of Indian Wells, Calif. He was 95.
Mr. Barron grew up in a walk-up
tenement in Holyoke, Mass. Poor, he
would hop box and coal cars between
his home and the University of
Michigan. His traveling companion,
roommate and fraternity brother was
Lester Gruber who went on to own
the London Chop House.
Another rail destination for Mr.
Barron was Hartford, Conn., where
his then girlfriend, and now wife, Flo-
rence had lived.
Mr. Barron's son, Guy, recalled the
family story that his mother would
often clean the heavy soot from Mr.
Barron before letting him see her par-
ents.
"My father was an elegant, gentle-
manly man," Guy Barron said, but
he was also a warrior who earned the
hard way every tribute paid to him."
Mr. Barron graduated from the
University of Michigan Law School
and was an attorney and real estate
developer.
He was the founding president of
Oakland University's Meadow Brook
Gallery Associates, which began in
1967.
Joseph E. Champagne, then presi-
dent of Oakland University, wrote
that Mr. Barron and his wife "played

a critical role in the development of
Meadow Brook Art Gallery," and
"provided excellent leadership, partic-
ularly when the gallery needed it."
Connoisseurs of wines, books and
art, Mr. Barron and his wife helped
and mentored unknown artists and
collectors. Their private collection
included paintings by Andy Warhol,
Claes Oldenberg and Frank Stella,
among others.
Mr. Barron is survived by his wife,
Florence Barron; son and daughter-
in-law, Guy and Nora Barron of
Bloomfield Hills; grandchildren, Eric
Barron and Marc and Lori Barron.
Interment was in Clover Hill Park
Cemetery, Birmingham. Contribu-

HENRY FAIGIN, 86, of Southfleld,
died Jan. 21. He is survived by his wife,
Frieda Faigin; son and daughter-in-law,
Gary and Pamylea Faigin of Seattle;
daughter and son-in-law, Sybil and
Michael Barden of Vancouver, B.C.; sis-
ter-in-law, Ann Faigin; grandchildren,
Sarah Faigin, Benjamin Faigin and Dora
Barden. Mr. Faigin was the loving
brother of the late Joe Faigin and the
late Elsie Katz.
