new program in adult
Jewish education got off to
a well-populated but sub-
dued start
Tuesday night at the
Kahn Jewish
Community Center.
Almost 200 peo-
ple showed up for
the first night of
Seminars for Adult
Jewish Enrichment,
or SAJE, a series of
courses that area
rabbis and commu-
nal leaders have vol-
unteered to teach.
With a hefty
Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan
Detroit centennial
exhibit consuming
the lobby and JCC
staffers efficiently
steering students to
their classrooms, few
people were left to
mill in the hallways
or clamor at the
entrance. Instead,
people gathered in
small groups outside
the classrooms or
simply waited quiet-
ly in their seats for
the courses to begin.
Unlike many
Jewish events, SAJE
actually starred on
time, thanks to the
strict JCC staffers
.ushering in the obe-
dient stragglers nibbling on refresh-
ments or running into the building a
few minutes tardy.
SAJE is a six-week effort by the
Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit and Agency for
Jewish Education of Metropolitan
Detroit to generate enthusiasm for
adult Jewish learning. The program of
ranging from Jewish
mini-courses
mysticism to secular interpretations of
the Torah - is taught at both the
West Bloomfield and Oak Park cam-
puses of the JCC and is modeled on a

successful program offered at the
Atlanta JCC. So far, 400 people have
registered for the courses, offered in
two three-week terms this winter.
In the Kahn library at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Rabbi Herbert Yoskowitz lec-

tured a class of 25 about the
healing power of psalms. His
charisma was hampered only some-
what by JCC requirements that all
courses be taped, thus keeping him
posted at the front of the class near
the microphone and not circulating
around the room as he said he usually
does.
In other rooms, Rabbi Leonardo
Bitran talked about the biblical story
of creation, educators Beth
Greenapple and Elissa Berg gave tips
