he Lunch and Learn
Rekindling Shabbat series,
sponsored by the Women's
Campaign and Education
Department of the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit, recently pre-
sented the program "Capturing the
Magic of Shabbat.” More than 100
guests attended. Rabbi Asher Lopatin
and his wife, Rachel Tessler Lopatin,
were featured.
Rabbi Lopatin is the rabbi of Anshe
Sholom B'nai Israel Congregation in
Chicago. He is completing his doctor-
al thesis at Oxford University on
Islamic fundamentalist attitudes
toward Jews.
Rachel Lopatin grew up in West
Bloomfield and is the daughter of
Charlotte and Warren Tessler. She
has her social work degree
from Columbia University.
Both she and her husband
are Wexner Fellows, a
scholarship and study pro-
gram for potential future
leaders of the Jewish com-
munity.
Together they discussed
the power of Shabbat.
Although they both went to
different universities for
their undergraduate
degrees, they said Hillel
foundations played impor-
tant roles in their lives.
Today, the Lopatins have
spirited Shabbat dinners with friends
and acquaintances. "Shabbat allows
you to experience something special.
Shabbat is a gift that makes you feel
like you deserve a gift," explained
Rachel.
The Lopatins generated excitement
in the room about celebrating
Shabbat. Not only did they display the
magic of Shabbat, they
exuded the magic of a warm
and loving relationship.
DRIVING PRESIDENT CLINTON
While most Americans are talking
about the impeachment trial, there's a
small cadre of people in our commu-
nity talking about the recent presiden-
tial visit.
When President Clinton came to
Detroit to address the Detroit
Economic Club, he needed drivers for
his motorcade. The White House
Advance Team chose Sandy Matz,
Jain Lauter, Ilyse Goldman, Adam
Lutz, Brian Raznick, Ian Bernstein
and Brian Schneider to drive in the
motorcade.
"I drove the White House staff
members from the airport to
Cobo Hall," said Matz. "I
even heard the Secret
Service talking on their
radios. It was exciting."
