Fruit Filling:
Use any flavor canned pie filling,
draining as much excess juice as pos-
sible.
Place 1 tablespoon of the filling in the
center of each won ton wrapper.
With your finger, run water around
the edges and fold dough over and
form a triangle. Heat a. skillet with a
small amount of oil. Saute until gold-
en, turning to cook both sides.

l hile it's nice to carry on
the traditions from past
generations, it's even
nicer to have a tradition
you can call your own.
Young families tried to create their
own on Sunday, Jan. 24, at the
"Making Your Own Traditions" pro-
gram at the Kahn Jewish Community
Center.
Mimi Markofsky, of Sperber's
Kosher Catering and Mimi's Deserts,
led 53 adults and youngsters on a
journey about traditions. She energet-
ically taught how to make old favorite
foods in new, fast and easy ways.
Knishes, kugels and kreplach were the
topics.
Markofsky demonstrated how to
make kreplach with potato and fruit
fillings. Afterwards, participants
experimented with their own at set-
up food stations.
Recipes and cooking suggestions
were distributed.
Here's a twist on an old favorite.

this delicious and easy recipe from the
program:
KREPLACH
To save time, purchase ready-made
won ton wrappers in the refrigerated
produce section of your favorite mar-
ket.
Potato Filling:
4 medium to large potatoes, peeled
and cut into chunks
2 medium onions, chopped
2-3 tablespoons oil or margarine
(or combination)
2 eggs, beaten well
Salt and pepper to taste
Place potatoes in boiling salt water
and cook until tender. Drain well.
Meanwhile, saute the onions in oil or
margarine until golden. Mash pota-
toes. Add onions, eggs and seasonings
to taste.

West Bloomfield, both came to the
program with their dads, Kevin and
Jeff. After the demonstration, they (--\
enjoyed stuffing their dough with
blueberry filling and loved watching
them turn into fried kreplach.
"They taste yummy, too," said
Rachel, with blueberry on her face.
Mark Weintraub of Birmingham
brought his 4-year-old cousin, Steven
Colburn, to enjoy the activities. "I'm
going to learn to cook and show
everything to my mom," Steven
proudly announced.
"I just learned to boil water, so I
thought this was the next step to
learn Jewish cooking," said Lauren
Amsterdam of Oak Park. "I dragged
along friends Jessica Kwartowitz (of
Birmingham) and Sally Hooberman
(of West Bloomfield), who both
want to learn to cook for their hus-
bands.
Event chairperson Lisa Granitz of
West Bloomfield, of YAD and the
Growth and Outreach Committee,
plans to continue "Making Your Own
Traditions" programs. We are excited
