"We are going to do a kickoff this spring, but since it happened so quick- ly, we can't produce what we'd consid- er the norm," said Margo Weitzer, the JCC director of programming. "Normally, we'd create this with a committee structure, but at this point, a lot of the foundations haven't been created yet." While no concrete dates have been selected yet for this year, she is hoping to run two or three films over a few days. Weitzer is exploring where the films will run. The JCC's Shiffman social hall seats 800, but it is being renovated this spring. Last year, the JCC used the United Artists in Commerce Township for the screening of The Jew in the Lotus and filled the auditorium. Weitzer said that the film festival will be part of the Jewish Life and Learning Department, but "what we do this year may or may not be how we handle it after that. "I think it has the potential to be on par with book fair in terms of size ✓ A Living Trust Saves You Money and scope," she continued. "The Jewish community supports Jewish culture, history and its current repre- sentation in society." The question of what constitutes a Jewish film is one that will be answered when committees are formed. For this year, the film Will have "Jewish content or some outward Jewish connection in the film like the subject matter, producer or director," Weitzer said. The intent, according to Weitzer, is to offer a connection to Jewish identi- ty through film and discussions. Its not our intent to have people show up and then leave two hours later," she said. "This could be an edu- cational experience, not just entertain- ment.'' According to Jewish Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit endowment guidelines, the $250,000 endowment would generate between $18,750 and $25,000 a year. Center leaders will seek corporate sponsorships to go with that. fl Save thousands on taxes, probate court costs and attorney fees. ✓ A Living Trust Saves You Time Settling estates through probate can drag on over several years. Kassow estimates that films cost around $1,000 per one-time screening. She tries to arrange a mix of documen- taries and feature films. "Every year, we try to respond with what's out and show the most current films," Kassow said. "We don't always get this year's releases because they will only get shown in New York or Boston." Kassow said Hartford has its festival after the Boston and San Francisco ones, so she can benefit from what they did. Toronto's festival takes place at the Bloor Cinema in downtown, while Hartford's splits time between the Cinestudio at Trinity College, the lib- eral arts school that co-sponsors the event, and the Gilman Theater in Hartford JCC. A number of cities with Jewish popu- lations smaller than Detroit's, including Denver, Phoenix and Tucson, already support Jewish film festivals. "Detroit should've had one a long time ago because of the size of the community," Schwartzberg said. "It depends on having the right person there to run it." 4J1-61:170 OFF Des; SAME DAY SERVICE •FRA IVI •SUNGLA E Clarification Because of an editing error, the article "World's Apart"on Jan. 8 about Russian- and American- born Jews at the Teitel Jewish Apartments & Services attrib- uted a quote to the wrong speaker.
