Coal Terminal Center, in Ashdod
along Israel's coast, is where you
can learn how coal gets out of the
deep earth, and what it's used for
once it gets above ground. This is
an hour-long presentation that fea-

The Cemetery is across from Ha-
Ari synagogue in Safed. This
charming city was once the center
of the kabbalistic movement, and it
remains home to some of the most
beautiful synagogues anywhere in
the world. (Ha-Ari was named for
Rabbi Isaac Luria.) The cemetery is
the final resting-place of kabbalistic
scholars, but it's also where you
will see the graves of some more
contemporary figures. Among these
are members of the Stern Gang
and the Irgun, who died fighting
for the establishment of a Jewish
state.

Jules Verne Explorer, in Eilat, will
satisfy the dreams of your young
adventurer who longs to see what
lies in the deep. You can watch the
blue, blue world below through
windows at the bottom of the boat.
Also, check out the "20,000
Leagues Under the Sea Deep
Water Laser Show" aboard the
Explorer — and watch out for the
giant squid.

Western Wall Tunnels in
Jerusalem take you underneath and
all around the Kotel. You'll be able
to walk through mysterious rooms
and passageways. Don't miss the
Second Temple model, where you'll
see exactly where the city stood
2,000 years ago. This site is
wheelchair accessible.

Open Air Restoration Museum
and Kibbutz Adventures, at Kibbutz
Ein Shemer along the coast, means
everybody gets to enjoy the fruits of
socialism (what better way to
appreciate the wonderful world of
capitalism!) for an afternoon. This

tour, for groups only, shows what
life was like on a kibbutz way, way
back when. You'll have a chance to \
actually try your hand at an old-style
plow.

Club Med has come to Israel —
yes, life is indeed grand. Just check
out this spot, in Eilat, for the hippest
of youngsters. There are all kinds of
Club Med activities, whatever those
are, and even a "mini club med"
for children three and older. Guests
must belong to Club Med.

Tzopari Bird Center in Tel Aviv is
definitely not for the birds. This
great site includes exotic creatures
from throughout the world. You'll
hear a lot of bird talk (in Hebrew,
of course). Some weird but wonder-
ful legends exist about this place,
including a story of the bird who
was so despondent after his mate
died that workers hired a bird psy-
chologist. Oy.
