Habonim Camp Tavor
Celebrating 45 years of creative
Jewish camping in a kibbutz
inspired atmosphere
Brett Levin of West Bloomfield and Ryan Weiner of Bloomfield Hills get ready to go
sailing. at Walden.
Friedman, like Kates, judges whether a proposed activity has staying power
before implementing at his camp.
"Jet skis may be great now, but I'm not convinved it will be a 10-year thing,"
Friedman said. "Those activities are just time-fillers."
The "Rave" and the "Blob" — a large air-filled mat in the water that allows
campers to jump off and
catapult others into the
lake — are both used at
Tamarack. But others
U
worry.
"All those toys present
some hazards," said Larry
Z5
Stevens, director of Camp
9
Walden. "I'd be leary of
using those objects in
swim areas," said Stevens,
who decided not to pur-
chase a water slide for his
camp.
Friedman at Camp
Tanuga also rejected a
water slide because he
didn't think there would
be much demand. "Our
clientele haven't been ask-
ing for it," he said. "What
new things we get won't
be because other camps
have it."
While Finkelberg sees
the activities changing,
what camper's get from
camp hasn't. "The memo- Scott Bendix of West Bloomfield on the tennis court.
ries, friendships and expe-
riences are the same,"
said Finkelberg. "Just how to get them is different. All are just tools to get chil-
dren to camp. They're not what camp's about." Ei
