StaffWriter

A

s a Detroit Cass High
School student in 1968,
Hertha Woodruff was sit-
ting in her English class on
a sunny April
day when word
spread of Martin
Luther King Jr.'s
assassination.
"A white
classmate came
up and asked
me, 'Who was
Dr. King?'" she
said. "I was so
amazed at the
question. I had
just heard his 'Mountaintop' speech
the night before, and I just thought he
was already well known."

She wasn't active in the movement
at the time, but remembered march-
ing in the Detroit Peace Walk in
1963 with Dr. King. She followed
the news and she was aware of the
injustices going on. She remembers
thinking that educating others about
them would
take time.
On that day
31 years ago, in
another area of
Detroit, Elaine
Schonberger,
was a student at
Henry Ford
High School.
She was already
involved in
inter-denomi-
national and inter-racial groups
through B'nai B'rith.
Her father, who had set up an
exchange dialogue between Temple
Beth El and the Greater New Mount
Moriah Baptist Church in Detroit in
the '40s, helped to expose the family

30 yea rs later,
