be behind in any subject when they
leave the school. People who take
classes seriously and want to learn can
challenge themselves and graduate well
ahead of competition.
The mission of the school that I am
proud to call my alma mater is one of
the most noble and difficult ones
found in all sects of Judaism. From
the time of its founding in 1964,
Akiva has come under strong attack
from all sides. No one believed it
would last for a decade, let alone 35
years.
And just as Akiva has surpassed
those early expectations and grown to
be an integral part of the Detroit Jew-
ish community, it will prove to be
stronger than all recent criticism and
continue along its honorable path for
many years to come.

Consider the work of German
philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, a
leader of the 18th-century Jewish
Enlightenment Movement. He knew
Jewish continuity hinged on suste-
nance of Jewish education, culture
and values. He also knew Jews had to
escape the ghetto and tap into Euro-
pean culture and the European way of
life as a gateway to success in the sec-
ular world.
Just as this son of a poor Torah
scribe fought to tear down walls of
ignorance, we must crumble barriers
of divisiveness if we in the Detroit
Jewish community want to remain a
national model of religious pluralism
— and sustain the flames of inter-
stream harmony for future genera-
tions of Jews.
