\3 N cheek to it before World War II. Although churches and synagogues struggled to soothe the unrest and were often at the forefront of civil-rights advocacy, riots continued to erupt. Even the Thanksgiving celebration fell by the wayside, discontinuing some time before mid-century. Such celebrations were revived again 24 years ago to unde- niably thinner and inconsistent crowds. This year's celebration, one of a handful in the area, was at the 800-seat St. Owen Catholic Church in Bloomfield Hills, a significantly smaller venue than in the early days. Rabbi Daniel Syme of Temple Beth El said "a good 700 people" participated, includ- ing the various clergy members, the 130-member choir and their families who came to see them perform. Just keeping track of all of them, much less coordinating them to work on large issues, can be difficult. Greater assimilation, intermarriage and an across-the-board push for ecu- menism in nearly every major religion in the past 30 years has led to a prolif- eration of groups that cater to a wide variety of interfaith concerns, from clergy to youth groups, from dialogue to political action. A post-Vatican II push for ecu- menism at the parish level spurred the growth of interfaith dialogue and social action groups. Covering small regions, the groups frequently are made up from the priests, pastors and rabbis of local congregations and often sponsor social action joint projects or social gatherings. Another challenge exists in trying to coordinate the large number of ecu- menical groups. Richard Singleton, a member of the Interfaith Coordinating Committee with NCCJ and director of the Christian Communication Council, said he wouldn't even take a guess at how many groups exist. Interfaith groups are not limited to ministerial associations; business groups, seminary associations, rescue missions, youth movements as well as other special-interest associations num- ber well over 100 and could be in the thousands, he said. "How you would ever put a number on it? I don't know," Singleton said. "The list goes on and on." Adding to the challenge is that not all religions are represented in the vari- ous dialogues because the interfaith groups are made up of congregations from a handful of towns; so, interfaith M-59/HALL RD.
