Gifts of stocks fuel a solid gain in
Federation Campaign collections.

The 17 percent gain in
the stock market last year
has had a positive and direct effect on
this year's gains in the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's
annual Allied Jewish Campaign figures.
According to George Cohen,
Federation's associate director, by year's
end, the $29 million campaign is $5.5
million ahead in collections from last
year, and a good portion of it is in
stock gifts.
As the end of the year reaps the
largest amount of collections, the
.stock market's performance is a key
determinant in the amount of stock
given, he said. "Based on this year, I
felt that we had a tremendous amount
of stock gifts."
He said, however, he couldn't pro-
vide exact figures on how much of the
$21.8 million collected so far was
stock donation.
Cohen cites two major benefits to
give through the stock market. "It's a
great way to meet your obligation
because you avoid capital gains, and
you get a charitable donation for the

gross amount as opposed to what your
cost was," he said.
Once received, the stock is sold
immediately, because the size of the
gift is determined on the day it is
received. We really can't play the
market, because what the donor tried
to do is satisfy his obligation," Cohen
said. "So obviously, if the stock went
down, we would have a problem.
Laura Linder, Federation's cam-
paign director, said the market is not
the only reason for the increase in
donations. Most of the divisions are
doing well, she said, but especially the
Young Adult and Women's divisions,
which have continued to show strong
increases. 7
