bold departure for Wayne. Previously,
the school had never received a gift
over a million dollars, and had a limit-
ed database of alumni and few mar-
keting tools at its disposal. But all that
has changed since the ascendancy of
the school's new high-profile presi-
dent, Irvin D. Reid.
Said WSU's Ritzenhein:
"Applebaum's is the kind of remarkable
leadership that shows what other alum-
ni should be doing. The School of
Pharmacy & Allied Health Professions
will serve not only those in the immedi-
ate area, but a broader audience, by
preparing students for the global world.
Although 75 percent of Wayne's gradu-
ates stay in the Detroit area, their jobs
and careers will be global."
Applebaum and his wife, Marcia,
are members of Congregation Shaarey
Zedek. Their gift funded the Eugene
and Marcia Applebaum Jewish
Parenting Center, which opened in
1992 at Shaarey Zedek B'nai Israel
Center in West Bloomfield. Noted the
center's Rabbi Leonardo A. Bitran:
"Their involvement is more than
financial; both of their grandchildren
attend the nursery school here."
"Gene Applebaum is a man who has
the respect and regard of all who are
associated with him," said Rabbi Irwin
Groner of Shaarey Zedek. "At the same
time as he was reaching even higher lev-
els of success in the world of business,
he undertook a growing scope of philan-
thropic and communal responsibilities,
all of which was self-imposed.
"He has been a source of inspiration
to his congregation and to the commu-
nity, as well as to the people of metro-
politan Detroit," added the rabbi.
Applebaum's mother, Minnie, is in
her 90s; Joseph was his late father. His
brother, Leonard, now retired, was
also a pharmacist.
The Applebaums have two daugh-
ters: Lisa, an art consultant in New
York who was formerly with Sotheby's,
and Pamela Applebaum Wyett, who
lives in Birmingham. Pamela and her
husband, Todd, are the parents 'of two
daughters, who are the Applebaums'
only grandchildren.
Applebaum is a member of the board
of directors and board of governors for
Comprehensive Cancer Center, and
chairs the endowment board of the
Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute in Detroit. He serves on the
board of trustees and executive commit-
tee for Children's Hospital of Michigan.
He's also an active donor to the Detroit
Institute of Arts and a supporter of the
Michigan Opera Theatre.
