Essay Meeting
Pairs Students
Over 70 Arab, Chaldean and Jewish
high school juniors and seniors who
are participating in the American
Arab and Jewish Friends 12th
Annual Essay Contest gathered
recently at WKBD TV50 studios.
Co-chairs Matt Kell and. Shelly
Komer Jackier briefed the students
on the guidelines for writing a win-
ning essay.
The students were then paired, an
Arabic or Chaldean student with a
Jewish student, each representing a
different school, to schedule time to
meet with one another during the
next three months. During this
time, they will each write two sec-
tions of the essay on "My Culture,
My Friend's Culture" while the third
part is written jointly on The Ties
That Bind." In addition, the stu-
dents will spend time with one
another to learn about their team-
mate's culture, religion and tradi-
tions by spending time at their part-
ner's home with their families and
some additional activities like visit-
ing their respective places of wor-
ship.
On Sunday, Jan. 24, the students
will enjoy time together as a group
in a social setting at whirlyball and a
pizza party.
The students will submit their
essays by March 1. Essays will be
judged by essay committee members
on March 11; the first, second and
third place winners will be announced.
All the students are invited to partici-
pate in Channel 50's "Straight Talk"
show in mid-May to be followed by
attendance at the 13th annual scholar-
ship dinner on May 16, at the Ritz
Carlton. The scholarship winners will
be announced and the students who
participated will be acknowledged.
Schools with winning students will
receive plaques with spaces for future
essay winners.
