comfortably at his Bingham Farms
home.
iiRosenblum and Tom Mikkelsen, a
'Henry Ford Hospital neurologist who
co-directs the neuro-oncology depart-
ment with Rosenblum, recently edit-
ed a book on how cancer cells can
proliferate in the brain, which is what
Rosenblum is most concerned about
in the ambassador's case.
Rosenblum said a recently devel-
oped technique called Eigen imaging
,.1 now available to see more precisely
where cancer cells may have spread.
Ford developed the process, a refine-
ment of Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI), and is the first hos-
pital in the world to use it,
Rosenblum said.
"It will be used in his case to make
sure we can treat as many of the
` wading cells
as possible,"
Rosenblum
said. "We have
a better under-
standing of
how they
spread and
how they can
be stopped."
/ A glioma —
a tumor made
up of the glial
cell, the
Ambassador
cement of
the brain — is David Hermelin
the most com-
mon type of tumor. It represents 60
to 70 percent of the tumors that
/occur. Hermelin's tumor was less than
two inches in diameter, which
Rosenblum described as average.
Mikkelsen is taking the lead on
Hermelin's treatment. Further treat-
1 ment will be collaborated with the
I Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute, and may also include other
facilities around the country.
• Henry Ford Hospital is part of a
consortium of hospitals selected by the
National Institute of Health's National
Cancer Institute to provide experi-
mental therapy to patients.
Massachusetts General and Johns
Hopkins in Baltimore, two of the best
in the country in neurology and neu-
rosurgery, also are part of the group.
Rosenblum said the ambassador
has a better prognosis than any (lit-
erature) would predict because there
is less tumor there and he is in excel-
lent clinical shape. Most likely, the
averages do not pertain to him.
He remains interactive, very opti-
mistic and upbeat. That makes a dif-
ference." E.
