Medical
Upbringing

Jewish and medical roots run deep
\ for Dr. Allen S. Lichter, the new
/-interim dean of the medical school at
the University of Michigan.
Dr. Lichter, 52, was born in
Detroit and grew up in the Seven
Mile Road-Livernois area of
Sherwood Forest. He attended
Pasteur Elementary School and Cass
Tech High School, before going on to
U-M and its medical school in 1964.
His father, the late Dr. Max
Lichter, was a Detroit physician for
more than 50 years, instilling the love
of medicine into Allen and his broth-
er, Paul, also a physician who chairs
U-M's Department of
Ophthalmology.
Ironically, Paul now reports to his
younger brother in the medical
school hierarchy. "He bossed me
around a little bit when we were
young and now it's my chance to get
even, said Allen. "It gives us the
opportunity to do some good-
natured ribbing with each other."

The family was affiliated with

Dr. Max Lichter served as president,
and where Allen and Paul were bar

president of Metropolitan Detroit
Hadassah.
Allen and his wife Evie live in Ann
Arbor and are active in its Jewish
community. She is involved with
Jewish Federation of Washtenaw
County and is on the board of the
Hillel Foundation at Eastern
( Michigan University.
Allen took a one-year sabbatical in
1993 and spent six months of it
doing volunteer medical work at
Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, "an
enriching experience that made me
even more proud of my Jewish her-
itage," he said.
He fondly recalls how he and his
brother spent a lot of time in their
father's office getting indoctrinated
into "doctoring" and performing sci-
entific experiments.
"Sometimes the experiments
worked and sometimes they didn't,
but at least we didn't blow up the
place," he said. El
