be repeated one month later. If the
second test also comes up positive, a
CAT scan is ordered along with a
transvaginal ultrasound to detect any
tumors.
Ironically, the PSA (prostate specific
antigen) blood test regularly prescribed
to detect prostate cancer in men also
comes with a 60 percent false positive
rate, yet not only is it routinely given
without having to be requested, it is
paid for by health insurance.
Because there are so few symptoms,
and most of those mimic other prob-
lems, ovarian cancer is indeed a silent
killer. Warning signs include vague
abdominal pain or discomfort, a feel-
ing of bloating or gassiness and fatigue
— the only symptom Purtan had.

Peace Prospects

The American Zionist
Movement will host a commu-
nity discussion on "The Wye
Accord: Will It Bring Peace and
Security for Israel?" 2 p.m.
Sunday, Jan. 10, at Adat
Shalom Synagogue.
Speakers, who were still being
confirmed earlier this week, will
all be passionate Zionists,
although with diverse opinions
about achieving peace and secu-
rity.
"In a way, this may give some
insight as to whether the Jewish
community can unite for the
security of Israel," said Ann
Barnett, president of the AZM,
Michigan Region, based in
Southfield.
The AZM is the umbrella
Zionist group that unites all
American Zionist organizations,
no matter what their political
leanings.
Adat Shalom is located north-
