36 Detroit Jewish News

The Jewish News has the audacity to
say in its editorial, "We want Akiva
Hebrew Day School and its high
school to survive and prosper," is
pathetic. If the editors really felt this
way, they would not have suggested
that Akiva merge with a proposed
Conservative high school. Such a
merger would eliminate an Orthodox
high school, not make it "prosper." Is
this a thinly veiled attempt to shift
Federation money to the proposed
school?
You appear to have sought out
interviewees who have left Akiva
because they were unable to work
within the niche that Akiva has effec-
tively served for many years. No
school can be everything to all people.
Many of us who have stuck with
Akiva respect aspirations to become
more observant yet still expect our
children to pursue professional careers
and attend top universities in the
future. These things will happen
whether Akiva offers two advanced-
placement courses or 10.
What is wrong with having a prin-
cipal and teachers who are examples of
observance that we can aspire to? Do
those who find Rabbi Karmi Gross
too religious expect an Orthodox day
school principal to be the lowest corn-
mon denominator?
My son, an Akiva 1 1 th grader, has
been an Akiva student since kinder-
garten. My daughter is one of the stu-
dents pictured both with her freshman
class and the graduating 'class of 1998.
I am proud that she along with her
graduating classmates have gone on to
the :yeshivot and colleges of their
choice and have chosen the path of
Torah and derech eretz.

Full Meaning
From Pictures

Regarding the column in your Dec.
18 issue ("When News Is Shocking"),
I do not accept Jonathan Friendly's
justifications for publishing an anti-
Israel article.
I saw two separate pictures. One
was of a Palestinian demonstrator
being struck by something — a bullet,
a rubber bullet, a huge stone, etc.—
by someone; the picture did not
include the person who launched the
weapon.
The second picture showed the
IDF (Israel Defense Forces) watching
some scene with one of them taking

aim. I do not know when or where
this took place.
We do not get a full understanding
of the events from these pictures. Mr.
Friendly, nevertheless, connected the
two pictures and then portrayed the
IDF soldiers as if they were acting
with malice. Through 50 years of
Israel's existence, the gentile media
with few exceptions has carried on a
campaign of bias against it, hoping to
turn Israel into a pariah state in the
eyes of the world. A Jewish News edi-
tor should not assist them.
We should know that, throughout
Israel's history, when there has been
cause to determine whether certain
IDF soldiers or certain army leaders
have acted inappropriately, the govern-
ment has investigated. A little-known
fact is that the IDF bases its actions
on the principle of purity of arms;
that might be well emulated by all
armies.
Let us never forget that the IDF is
the symbol that Jews are no longer a
helpless people. The young men of the
IDF put their lives on the line to pro-
tect a national homeland for all Jews.
Precious thousands who have given
their young lives lie buried on Mt.
Herzl (Israel's Arlington National
Cemetery). Their families carry on
with broken hearts.
We should thank God every day of
our lives for the Israel Defense Forces.
