The group, which is open to all, has perhaps 40 active members, and as many as 300 on its mailing list. Youmans describes the territories administered by Palestinian Authority Chairman Yassir Arafat as "inhos- pitable, desolate land unsuitable for development. "Right now," said Youmans, "it doesn't really matter if they get state- hood since they lack the wealth to do anything with it." Salhi echoed his sentiment, noting the "most impor- tant thing is that people eat and have the basic necessities of life." While the number of Jewish or Palestinian students at U-M is uncer- tain, their political issues clearly are not parochial ones. Over 800 people attended a November conference on the peacemaking process. Despite the seeming optimism that Palestinian statehood isn't likely to bring dire consequences, members and sup- porters of the three groups, and their friends, have traded some harsh words in the past. A panel discussion last fall dete- riorated into orations, instead of a dia- logue, when several panelists decreed there was nothing to discuss inasmuch as they didn't recognize Israel's right to exist. In the wake of that experience, stu- dent leaders plan to try to find com- mon ground on a cultural basis, rather than a political one, at future meetings. "I think that they see that there are political difficulties, but they see there are areas on a universal basis on which they can come together," said Rabbi Rich Kirshen of U-M's Hillel Foundation. Toward that end, Kirshen said among the items on tap is a film festi- val and a joint cultural event in February for Jewish and Arab students to help break down and understand each other's culture better.
