Jacob "Jack" Schwartz, who devoted
part of his life to helping veterans, the
homeless and children, died Dec. 30.
The Farmington Hills resident was 80.
"He lived vibrantly, robustly," said
Robin Stearn of her father. "He devot-
ed a great deal to veterans, the home-
less and the poor children in the inner
city."
She pointed out with pride how her
father instilled in his children and
grandchildren a strong sense of their
Judaism. His grandchildren are active
in community service and one is
studying for the rabbinate.
Mr. Schwartz was an accountant
and consultant at the Small Business
Administration for the State of Michi-
gan. He had a remarkable veteran's
career as evidenced by his 13 citations
for outstanding achievement and his
election to the presidency of the
Wayne Country Allied Veterans Coun-
cil on four different occasions. The
Allied Veterans Council is an umbrella
organization comprising 20 veterans'
groups of many faiths. Its purpose is to
champion veterans' rights, secure better
care and treatment of hospitalized vet-

Commission on Veterans Affairs. He
was honored as Michigan Veteran of
the Year in 1989 and Outstanding Vet-

man of Jewish War Veterans and vice
chairman of the JWV's Resolutions
Committee. He most recently was
e
chief of staff of the Michigan depart-
ment of Jewish War Veterans.
Mr. Schwartz worked closely with
Gov. John Engler as chairman of the
Foundation for Homeless Veterans, a
program that educates homeless veter-
ans of the benefits to which they are
entitled. He retired with the rank of
brigadier general.
As distinguished as his veteran
career was, Mr. Schwartz was a tireless
and enthusiastic volunteer at the VA
Hospital, where he had the highest
number of volunteer hours (almost
4,000) and was there every Sunday
and Christmas.
He also volunteered at the Louis
Stone Foundation, which helped
underprivileged children. He was a 48-
year member of Congregation Beth
