Of course, there is a lot more to
the province of New Brunswick than
Saint John. One of the scenic delights
is the magnificent Bay of Fundy.

One of the wonders of the woiid is
the bay's Hopewell Rocks. At luw ride
you can walk on the ocean floor. At
very once in a while, you
come across a very pleasant
surprise as you travel the
vast world. My most recent
surprise was a tiny but vibrant Jewish
community in Saint John, a small
town of 35 families in the Canadian
province of New Brunswick:
The roots of this Jewish gem go
back to 1858, when Alice and
Solomon Hart emigrated from Eng-
land and settled in this Maritime
province. Other Maritime provinces
of Canada are Newfoundland, Nova
Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
The Harts started a successful fac-
tory in Saint John and also helped
found the first synagogue, Ahavith
Achim or Brotherly Love, in 1898.
Their daughter was the first Jewish
bride there.
Also in the 1890s, a wave of Jewish
immigrants came to Saint John from
Dorbian, Lithuania. Many of today's
families can trace their roots to the
Lithuanian shtetl.
In 1899, a second
synagogue was estab-
lished. Right after
