Help for
depression,
Alzheimer's and
other forms of
dementia.

Dementia is a syndrome character-
ized by a gradual onset of symptoms,
including memory loss and a decline
in cognitive abilities, such as thinkino-
and decision-making. Alzheimer's dis-
ease is the most common, but not the
only cause of dementia. Recognizing
symptoms early and obtaining an
accurate diagnosis is very important.
For instance, dementia is sometimes
caused by medication side effects,
poor nutrition, and depression. Prop-
er treatment can often reverse these
symptoms.
When we evaluate an elderly per-
son's ability to function at home, we
assess what help they may need for
their own safety," explains Joanne
Zussman, a social worker at the Day
Hospital. "If we can help someone
feel better about himself and behave
better, and if we can keep families
coping with their parents and accept-
ing the illness, then we've made
progress.
Recent studies suggest that 15-25
percent of the 30 million Americans
over 60 may need mental health ser-
vices. Moreover, major depressive dis-
orders occur in 10-30 percent of
patients with Alzheimer's disease.
