Jewish Ethics Meer." Sounds like an
intellectual singles bar.
Other examples: a fascinating essay
on Purim and the Spanish Expulsion
and a thoughtful piece on the com-
munal realities of Jewish studies.
And if vou like creepier stuff, a
Ph.D. student examines the origins of
the dvbbuk in "Jews and Demons."
A theater section tells wannabe
playwrights how to apply for one of
the FoundatiQn's play commissions,
and offers a handful of articles. The
most intriguing: "The Talmud:
Corning to a Stage Near You," a
review of the Theatre Company,
Jerusalem's attempt to make Talmud
come alive for neophytes.
Another section describes films
supported by the Fund for Jewish
Documentary Filmmaking, and
includes a few high-toned essays on
Jewish films, although the material
here is a bit thin.
"CultureCurrents," a monthly
electronic magazine featured on the
site, provides interesting scholarship
that even ordinary shleps can under-
stand.
Of course, there's all the usual
organizational brochure stuff describ-
ing all the great things this group
does and who does it, and there's a
tastefully understated section describ-
ing what you can do to give them
money. But it's such a nice site you're
not likely to be put off by the organi-
zational hype.
Besides, they have the classiest-
sounding URL (Web address) in
Jewish cyberspace:

Pirating software may be epidemic
in today's computer-centered
world, but it's not Jewish. That was
the message of the Business
Software Alliance. According to
reports in the Israeli press, the
group, which battles bootleg pro-
grams, sought and obtained a rul-
ing by a rabbinical court in Israel
forbidding the buying and selling
of bootleg software.
Don't do it, the rabbis warn.
Bill Gates is no doubt pleased.
