reports of anti-aircraft fire
lighting up the Iraqi skies.
But more than 300 others waited out-
doors in the misty, cool West
Bloomfield air, all eyes on an oversized
Chanukah menorah. Slowly and grad-
ually, its candles burned brighter and
brighter, turning our own skies light.
Coming inside, families enjoyed the
Dec. 16 Chanukah Hoopla at the
Shaarey Zedek B'nai Israel Center.
Some of the adults present reflected
upon the contrast of celebrating the
holiday here, at the very moment of
uncertainty and terror so close to
Israel.
Nursery school teacher Lisa Schiff
called it "ironic that we - are here at this
massive celebration with the world in
such strife." She added, "But in this
corner of the world, that's not how it
is. I say this with almost a sense of
b guilt, , for having n
such a fun time
here tonight. I
feel blessed."
The syna-
gogue's clergy ;
parenting center
and nursery and
religious schools
organized the
event. Shaarey
Zedek Rabbi
Leonardo Bitran
described it as "a
team effort, a

coming together when we don't usual-
ly come together." He called the
bration a much-needed "reinforcin
sense of Judaism in a time when

that "Chanukah should belong to the
synagogue, not just to the home."
Rabbi Joseph Krakoff of Shaarey
Zedek spoke of the need for light in
dark times. He said that "many bon
days this time of year, such as Diwali,
Kwaanza and Christmas, as well as
Chanukah, bring light into the darkest
part of the year." This light helps to
counter the darkness of winter and
any accompanying sadness.
Safe from the unrest in the greater
world outside, the synagogue teachers
showed the young artists-how to create.
jewelry boxes from cardboard using
colored glue and stickers. Inside
Shaarey Zedek's warm, balloon-filled
social hall, teacher Joyce Bagley said
she felt "very insulated here." Her col-
