f

of the Lovelight Foundation, a non-
profit organization offering education,
outreach and funding to children,
women and families. Slatkin described
the mission as "an opportunity for
grantmakers from the general commu-
nity, who have already been quite gen-
erous to us as a Jewish community, to
try to understand Israel and its people
and the way the Detroit Jewish com-
munity feels about Israel." He added
that "the only way this is possible is by
going there. Love of Israel can't be
described in words."
Pleased with the mission's outcome,
Slatkin said, "It was interesting how
we bonded as a group. We now have a
better, deeper, more personal relation-
ship with the grantmakers on the mis-
sion, and no doubt a lot of good will
come of it.

A first trip to
Israel was an
eye-opening
experience.''

"The reason for that was that we
had far more in common than maybe
we ever thought going into the mis-
sion — perhaps that we are all grant-
makers trying to.do good."
Imberman said he hopes this
opportunity has allowed representa-
tives "to better understand Federation's
role in Israel and here in Detroit."
Slatkin discussed the possibility of a
second grantmakers' mission to Israel
that would "include the general com-
munity, not just the Jewish communi-
ty." He added, "We know we have to
do this again, maybe in a year or two."
In the meantime, Campbell said he
looks forward to a Jan. 10 mission
reunion. Reflecting on his trip, he
said, "I hold in very high regard the
Federation and the UJF leadership,
having known and worked with them
for years. The opportunity -to learn
more about the Detroit Jewish com-
munity and the role that Israel plays,
is an important one. I saw that Israel,
because of its common link through-
out the country, is able to do things
that are remarkable to see as far as
helping social inclusion.
"I've never been involved in any-
thing like this before," said Campbell.
It was just amazing.
