For Seniors

Jewish Family Service provides older
adults with escorted door-to-door
transportation to medical appoint-
ments, grocery shopping,
hospital/nursing home visits and to
social activities at the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit.
JFS drivers are available by appoint-
ment from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday
through Thursday, and 7 a.m.-5 p.m.
oil Friday.

T'chiyah
Plans Program

Congregation T'chiyah, Royal Oak
and Detroit, will host a program 10
a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at the Royal
Oak Woman's Club, 404 South
Pleasant at West 4th Street, between
Woodward and Lafayette.
Shabbat services will be led by
Jeffrey Ram and Sheila Kohn. After
services, there will be a presentation
by Dr. Martin Herman, professor
emeritus, Department of Humanities,
Wayne State University.
Professor Herman, long-time mem-
ber of the WSU faculty, is a
teacher/scholar in Humanistic Studies,
with special expertise in musicology.
Professor Herman will present
"The Many Voices of Jewish
Liturgical Music: An Illustrated
Discussion." The objective of the
presentation will be to explore the
is:ue by illustrating — with selected

musical examples — a number of
varied musical idioms, which have
been used to set various liturgical
texts.

Adam M. Grant, a senior at West
Bloomfield High School, has been
accepted by Harvard University, which
he will attend in the fall. His proud
parents are Mark and Susan Grant.

The Creative Artists Grant, funded
by the Michigan Council for Arts
and Cultural Affairs and adminis-
tered by ArtServe Michigan, is going
to several Detroit-area residents.
Among them are: Mark Gottlieb of
Royal Oak, to fund the composition
of a song cycle for chamber orches-
tra; Sheila Landis of Rochester
Hills, to create a series of jazz works;
Robert B. Schefman of West
Bloomfield, for the creation of a
diptych oil painting titled Utopia;
Barbara Selinger of Farmington
Hills, to create and produce a multi-
media dance; Peter Markus of
Detroit, to complete a nonfiction
work and present readings and writ-
ings workshops; Ruth Behar of Ann
Arbor, for the completion of a novel;
Erika Block of Ann Arbor, to devel-
op a screenplay; and Joshua Henkin
of Ann Arbor, to create a collection
of short stories.
