ften it seems the only role
model for age is the rocking
chair. But an awful lot of
people have gotten past
youthful definitions of life and chart-
ed new possibilities.
It's more than sheer gutsiness
that makes William Stone, Frank
Winton or Bill Serman unique.

Norine Zimmer is a gerontologist in

Huntington Woods.

They believe it's better to have
stresses and take risks at any age.
All three are competitive athletes
who live their lives on broad can-
vases.
Winton, 84, and a successful land
developer, returned to tennis compe-
tition at age 75. His biggest success,
he said, was playing in the national
clay courts tournaments three years
ago and making it to the finals. "I
lost, but was ranked No. 3 in 80-and-
over (age category) in the country. I
was ranked over Gardner Malloy,
who was a Davis Cup player."
