Union and Israel, with an emphasis
on the human results of JDC projects.
But the articles are maddeningly
short, and they read like — well, sto-
ries in an advertising flyer for the
organization. There are links to click
for more information, but they just
take you back to the main news and
features page.
This is a new site, so hopefully the
information here will be fleshed out.
The news section, consisting of press
releases about the group's activities, is
more substantive. One release
announces the group's student jour-
nalism award; another documents
their ongoing work in Ethiopia.
Much more interesting are the articles
about the group's relief activities in
places with few Jews, including
China, Cuba and Rwanda.
In the "About the JDC" section,
there's an interesting timeline docu-
menting the group's amazing history ,.
The site is attractive and well
designed; moving from screen to
screen is easy and fast. Hopefully, the
Webmasters at the JDC will comple-
ment their awesome graphics with a
bit more content in the near future.

Seen On
The Net

In The Mail

The Jewish Internet is buzzing
with talk about a new mailing list:
"Tik k un: The Donmeh of the
Internet." The list is "devoted to
the teaching and practice of
Lurianic Kabbalah," according to
its owners, "particularly as taught
by the 17th-century Jewish messi-
ah and avatar, Sabbatai Zvi.
Huh? That last part got the
attention of some more conven-
tional Jewish thinkers, who started
sending out warnings: Sabbatai
Zvi, of course, is Judaism's most
notorious false messiah.
The list itself has been a rather
dry, academic affair, but numerous
Jewish forums are hopping with
discussions about it. The list
seems to be in the process of mov-
ing, so no address is currently
available.

Made For Kids

www.s arksmag. corn

Jewish kids ages 9-13 now have a Web
site they can go to, without having
parents worry about what their young
eyes are seeing.
The site, www.sparksmag.com , is
clearly a made-for-kids site with its
bright graphics and varied font sizes. it
focuses on issues important to the site's
target audience, with what's hot and
what's not and an interactive chat
room being the nicest areas of the
page.

Currently, a lot of space is dedica[-
ed to the movie Prince of Egypt,
which was released by DreamWorks
SKG on Dec. 18. That area offers a
link to the movie's official site:
wwvv.prince-of-egypt.com , and links
to sound clips of two of the hit songs
from the movie from Boyz-II-Men
and the Mariah Carey-Whitney
Houston duet.
While showing a scene from the
movie of the parting of the Red Sea,
there is a link to a map that shows
where the Red Sea is. Visitors can talk
about their heroic stories.
For teachers, the movie has
prompted the Webmasters to put out
a teacher's guide for the movie in the
Teacher Talk section. A teacher's guide
is also offered in the "Kids Page," a
weekly print edition of the normally
electronic magazine.
Unfortunately, what seemed like a
great idea in creatina the site, in reality
b and go by the
is likely be dismissed
wayside.
One disappointment: although
Chanukah is over now, there was
nothing on the site about it during the
holiday. That oversight, combined
with the general lack of solid content,
most likely will leave this site only use-
ful as a springboard to the dynamic
"Prince of Egypt" site.
