Jancra-nva-a 3N JEWISH NEWS www.detroitjewishnews.com December 25, 1998 Vol. CXIV, No. 18 In Shifting Sands It is a remarkable period in our nation's history. For American Jews in particular, with our special sensitivity to events at home and in Israel, the news is a disconcerting blur. In recent days Israel shunned President Clinton while the Palestinians cheered him. Then he ordered an attack on Iraq that drew Arab protests and Israeli yawns. Finally, the House of Representatives voted impeachment while the Israeli Knesset rejected Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's peace plans and set new national elections in motion. Each action has serious implications for Jewish concerns — whether they be about the rule of law and the nature of democra- cy, or anxiety for friends and relatives in Israel. On the following pages we provide news reports, photographs and analysis from world capitals. And on our Editorial Page, page 24, we tell you what we make of the events.
