Next we visited the yeshiva room in
the adjoining building. In the narrow
room, also a faithful reconstruction,
was a wooden table with eight chairs,
and in one corner, a stone chair like
the one used by the scholar Rashi.
Next to the study hall was the
Rashi House, a small museum with
varied exhibits — Judaica objects as
well as documents and photos
focused on the Jewish history of
'77 Worms, including a map of the
Jewish quarter as it existed in the
Middle Ages.
Another exhibit showed photos of
the Jews of Worms during the Nazi
era. Ironically, this very site served
as the assembly point for deporta-
tion to the death camps. During the
Holocaust, 500 Worms Jews per-
_ fished, and a Jewish community was
not re-established afterwards.
Next we went outside and
around the corner, where we
descended a narrow flight of stairs
to see the thick stone walls and the
well of an authentic mikvah that
dares from 1189. "It was used until
Jews were allowed to leave the ghet-
to in 1802," said our guide.
In contrast to the ancient mikvah
was the modern sculpture of Rashi
that stands in the main plaza,
Synagogenplatz. Installed three years
ago, it's a relatively new addition to
this historic sire. Angular and
abstract, it represents Rashi, depicting
him holding a Torah and wearing a
high hat typical of the time.
Just beyond the central plaza is the
curving cobblestoned street named
Judengasse because this is where the
Jews of the town once lived — in
fact, were required to live. The
restored houses here were their origi-
nal homes.
As the last stop on our tour, we
visited the Jewish cemetery, located
just beyond the southwest corner of
the city wall. Inside the iron gate
was an expansive, tree-shaded area
with row after row of tombstones in
all shapes and sizes. Some stood on
level ground and others were on a
hill beyond the front section.
In all, there are about 2,000
tombstones in this historic ceme-
tery, the oldest stone dating from
076, with a separate section desig-
nated as the "valley•of the rabbis"
— evidence of the vibrant Jewish
life that once flourished here.
Even though that Jewish life no
longer exists, the legacy remains, care-
fully preserved by the citizens of
Worms.
