You can't ignore women. Some of
the old guys don't like it, but we had to
change," he says.
The spa is building a large female fol-
lowing and I can see why. It's nice to
relax in a place that doesn't emphasize
beauty and isn't crawling with teenage
models.
My noodly legs walk me back to my
car. I fight off the tension attempting to
weasel its way back into my neck mus-
cles, but it's no use. I'm in L.A. 1 light
.up a toxin stick and begin the gradual
process of replenishing my body of
chemicals and stress.
I guess I'll have to go back. Only next
time, I think I'll bring some girlfriends,
because it's the company, I think, that
makes a sauna a shvitz.

Shvitzing
In Detroit

Up until a couple of months ago, a
women's-only night was on the
schedule at the Schvitz, still at its
original location on Oakland and
Clay, near Detroit's New Center.
"Not enough women came to
make it feasible," said chef Fran
McIntyre, whose brother, David,
owns the Schvitz today
Women still attend during cou-
ples' nights 7 a.m.-2 a.m. Fridays
and Saturdays ($60 admission) and
along with single men 4-11 p.m.
Mondays and Tuesdays (530). Men
only are welcome 4-11 p.m.
Wednesdays and Thursdays; 1-5:30
p.m. Saturdays; and 7 a.m.-1 p.m.
Sundays ($25).
Admission includes use of the
facility's whirlpool, swimming pool,
Russian steam room and indoor
and outdoor Jacuzzis. The price for
an hour's massage is $60; $35 for a
half-hour. Full dining facilities are
available, just as in the Schvitz
post-Depression heyday when it
was called the Detroit Oakland
Bathhouse.
Fran McIntyre says about 15-20
women typically show up on the
singles' nights and there are 25-30
couples on Fridays — "more than
that"on Saturdays.
The Schvitz is reached from the
Clay Boulevard Exit 54 off I 75.
