L

Mile, hoped to eventually sell his suc-
cessful dining spot and move to Cali-
fornia ... He'd buy some land to grow
grapes ... and make wine.
Vargo owned one of this area's finest
wine cellars and said that in his opin-
ion, California wines were equal or
better than European wines ... Raised
eyebrows quickly had him qualifying
this statement with an opinion that
cost-wise this was so ... However, as
the years went by his original state-
ment turned out to be quite true ...
without the price difference.
A CHALET-TYPE building that
had a beautiful intimate interior of
heavy-beamed ceilings and a full
grown tree marked the former Board-
walk Restaurant & Lounge on Tele-
graph near Joy Road
It later became
Antoinette's, an Italian eatery owned
by Jim and Antoinette Larco Ney.
THE NOSHERIE in the Advance
Building on Greenfield, opened by
Ron Forman and Earle Mostyn of the
Nosherie in Oak Park's Lincoln Cen-
ter, was a cafeteria-delicatessen restau-
rant that seated about 150 ... Ron and
Earle made their second spot into an
enchanting sort of place ... The cafete-
ria was in a sseparate room, with the
line ending at an entrance to the main
dining room, where trained waitresses
carried the tray to your table.
Folks wantinab eggs,
a steak or other
b
made-to-order foods had only to pick
up a phone at the line's beginning, put
in the order and the food was ready by
the time they got to the cooking area
... A carry-out department was also in
a separate closed off section, and folks
eating in the dining room didn't see
anything but other tables and people
... (Today, Ron has the Bread Basket
Deli and next-door BB Bar-B-Q Place
in Lincoln Center ... Earl is owner of I
the Mostyn Insurance Agency.)
YESTERYEAR'S STAR of so many
places here, "Saucy Sylvia" Stoun, is a
thoroughly educated entertainer ... She
loves to make people happy with her
risque songs and get-together funfests.
Sylvia's background doesn't fit the
usual show business stereotype .. As a
child, she studied voice and classical
music for 10 years, an experience
that taught her to love all forms of
music ... Sylvia has a BA from the
University of Toronto, and an MA in
languages from Ohio University
where she studied German on a
scholarship ... She almost accepted a
teaching fellowship from Ohio State
University to get her Ph.D. when an
agent saw Sylvia singing and playing
piano in a college show and urged
her to turn pro ... (Today, Sylvia is
