A lot of women are so afraid of
breast cancer they don't want to
hear about it.
And that's what frightens me.
Because those women won't
practice breast self-examination
regularly.
Those women, particularly
those over 35, won't ask their doc-
tor about a mammogram.
Yet that's what's required for
breast cancer to be detected
early. When the cure rate is 90%.
And when there's a good chance
it won't involve the loss of a
breast.
But no matter what it involves,
take it from someone who's been
through it all.
Life is just too wonderful to
give up on. And, as I found out,
you don't have to give up on any
of it. Not work. not play, not even
romance.
Oh. there is one thing. though.
You do have to give up being
afraid to take care of yourself.

FROM "SIDE DISHES" in Nation's
Restaurant News ... "For vegetarians,
holidays can be a culinary nightmare,
particularly if their families savor
turkeys with all the trimmings.
"However, if you are one of those
people for whom the sight of a holiday
bird sends you heading to the TV for a
little more football and are tired of
vegetable lasagna as a substitute, you
have an alternative.
"Inveterate herbivores can enjoy the
look and the protein of turkey, too.
They can order a tofurkey. Tofurkey,
made by a Hood River, Ore., compa-
ny, is a turkey-shaped roast made of
tofu and wheat gluten. It comes with
mushroom gravy and your `drum-
mettes' are made of tempeh, a fer-
mented food made from cooked soy-
beans.
"According to Seth Tibbott, chief
executive chef of Turtle Island Foods,
the roast looks and slices like white
meat turkey, and the drummettes
resemble dark meat turkey legs.
Tofurkey can be found in health food
stores for about $20.
'There is another alternative, called
the Unturkey, made by Now and Zen '-
of San Francisco. Unturkeys are made
with wheat gluten, have a bean curd
`skin,' and come with vegetable stuff-
ing and vegetarian gravy. "D
