Super Chanukah Site Please send The Detroit Jewish News to: www.chanukah98.corn American Friends of Lubavitch, the folks who plant those big menorahs in public places, don't do outreach half way, so it shouldn't come as a big surprise that their Chanukah site is a winner - attractive and filled with interesting and fun stuff. If there's any Lubavitch proselytizing on the "Chanukah 98" homepage, it's subtle enough not to detract from the site's appeal to less obser- vant visitors. The site opens with a splash a bunch of menu options on the right and a video of "menorahs around the globe." Other video clips available: a talk on the holiday by the late Lubavitch Rebbe Menachem Schneerson and a cute little slide show of Chabadniks sharing Chanukah fare with Israeli soldiers In the truly cool department: a clip of astronaut Jeff Hoffman explaining Chanukah while floating around in the space shuttle. Had enough videos? Then move on to the Chanukah guide, which explains holiday rituals the Chasidic way, or to the nicely done explana- tion of Chanukah's origins. In a section labeled "olive drops," click on a candle for a brief nugget of Jewish wisdom appropriate to the hol- iday. There's a place where visitors can tell their "mitzvah stories," another with touching Chanukah tales. There's also a small section of more advanced learning materials, includ- ing a brief talk by the Rebbe on Chanukah and the advent of tech- nology. Then there are the obligatory games, including an online dreidel you can spin (silly, but the kids may love it), a word search and a holiday picture puzzle. Be warned: the video clips are slow to download and slow to play, even with a 56K modem. You have to real- ly want to see these things to make it worthwhile. The site is designed for easy use, right down to the big "hey, where do I go from here?" button in the middle of the opening page. The information is well presented - not too much, not too advanced, and not written in the "English as a second language" style of many Orthodox sites. All in all, it's one more cyber suc- cess for the high-tech Chasids. Check it out at: www.chanukah98.com - James D. Besser Tape or glue label here: (Please print clearly.) Name Address Apt. No. City State Zip Telephone Seen On The Net A living monument Speaking of Lubavitch, the Jewish Internet lost one of its pioneers two weeks ago with the untimely death of Rabbi Y.Y. Kazen, creator of Chabad in Cyberspace and one of the most energetic advocates of the Web as a tool for Jewish out- reach. Kazen was a familiar figure in a wide range of Jewish discussion groups, where he stuck to his reli- gious convictions - but always with a good humor and an open- ness that won him friends around the world. The central Chabad site at wwvv.chabad.org remains a living monument to his vision. - -James D. Besser Computer-savvy Satmars You gotta love those Satmars. They may seem like Jewish relics, but they have a glitzy Web site that will tell you just about everything you ever wanted to know about this Chasidic group, which bills itself as the largest Orthodox community on earth. The site includes pictures documenting "the Zionist occupa- tion of the Holy City" of Jerusalem. Find it at vvww.satmar.com - James D.
