Winners of the first Benard L. Maas Foundation Prize for Achievement in
Jewish Culture and Continuity were recently announced by the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and the United Jewish Foundation. James
August , far left, presented the awards to, from left, historian Dr. Sidney
Bolkosky; artist Lynne Avedenka; the Rabbi Leo M. Franklin Archive of
Temple Beth El represented by archivist Heidi Christein; and the Jewish
Ensemble Theater artistic director Evelyn Orbach. At far right is Hiram A.
Dorfman, president of the Maas Foundation, which provided funding for the
prize, established to celebrate excellence in the arts and humanities in Jewish
life and recognize artists, scholars and institutions whose work or programs
enhance Jewish life and advance Jewish arts and culture.
