in. Then you, too, will witness mira-
cles in your life.
When we recite the special bless-
ing as we light the menorah, we
remember the miracle of Chanukah
and bring the power of the light of
miracles into our lives. We illumi-
nate our homes with the menorah
lights and pray that the divine light
they represent stay with us long after
the candle has burned out.
But we can't forget to make the
effort.
It is interesting that Chanukah
takes place in the winter, the season
when the least amount of light is
physically present. Likewise, the
events of Chanukah tell us about the
Jewish people uniting and recon-
necting at a time when a majority of
the Jews felt lost in the darkness of
assimilation. The opportunity of
every Chanukah is for each one of
us to make the effort to reawaken
spirituality in our homes, in our
communities and in the world at
large
Each night, as we slowly increase
the number of candles kindled in
the menorah, we symbolically
increase our commitment to bring
spiritual light to the world. Today,
with assimilation ravaging our num-
bers as never before, it is incumbent
upon those of us who identify as
Jews to remember the fight of the
Maccabees against the same kind of
insidious cancer that ate away at the
Jewish population of their day. We
must let the light of our commit-
ment shine forth along with the
light of the menorah candles. III

OPINION

SWISS BANKS from page 22

brutalized in Serbia's rape camps.
"We Jews wanted to awaken the
world to what the Swiss did," Prager
says. "We don't want to profit by it."
Exactly. The litigants who prevailed
against the Swiss banks have it in
their power to show that the Jewish
nation cares far less for money than it
does for truth and justice. They can
halt the arguing and give the money
away. It would be an act of tremen-
dous moral beauty. .. And it would
teach the world a powerful lesson in
compassion.
